Calcium carbide is a chemical compound that when exposed to water, undergoes a chemical reaction to produce highly flammable acetylene gas (C₂H₂), which can be utilized in processes such as welding, cutting, and metal fabrication.

Acetylene gas produced from calcium carbide is also used as a building block in the chemical industry to manufacture a wide variety of organic chemicals, including vinyl chloride (for PVC), acetaldehyde, acetic acid, and synthetic rubber.
