It catches fire easily, or may lead to explosion hazards when mixed with organic materials like sugar, herbicides, sulfur, phosphorus, powdered metals, and strong acids.
Sodium Chlorate is a precipitate for palladium. It will oxidize palladium ions, converting them into palladium oxide or palladium dioxide. This is a preliminary step in the preparation of palladium catalysts or other palladium-containing compounds.
Sodium Chlorate is one substance used by law enforcement to train K-9s to detect specific odors associated with explosives.
